BATJ Early-Summer Conference 'Rethinking Oral Proficiency in Japanese – How should we help our students develop it and assess their development?'

Date: 15th and 16th May 2010
Venue: The Japan Foundation London Language Centre (Russel Square, ambulance London)
Speaker: Dr Noriko Iwasaki (BATJ member, SOAS University of London, OPI trainer approved by the ACTFL)

A familiarisation workshop to Oral Proficiency Interview (‘OPI’ hereafter) will be first offered to help participants become familiar with the principles and techniques of OPIs, which was developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) based on many years of research and practice. Then, case studies of the methods of oral assessment from some institutions will be outlined and opportunities to analyse spoken skills using different methods will be provided. Participants will discuss teaching and assessment of different aspects of oral proficiency, including social and interactive dimensions, such as ‘aizuchi’ and turn-taking during conversation.  Moreover, a comparison will be made among the ACTFL guidelines, the CEFR and the recently launched JF Japanese Standards in terms of crucial aspects of oral skills.  The conference will end with a lecture on recent research on oral proficiency of learners of Japanese.

- Abstract
- Book online

In this seminar, through focusing on some major textbooks, we shall examine the passive in terms of grammar rules and sentence structure, and the grammatical errors made by learners of Japanese. This will include an in-depth, interactive discussion of the speaker's PhD research, as well as smaller group discussions to explore the topic in greater detail. We advise participants to revise their own textbooks beforehand and bring them with them to the seminar. We also request that participants bring for discussion their own examples of other common mistakes made by learners of Japanese.
